Tensions Run High as Russia's Foreign Minister Meets with US Counterpart in Malta
In a dramatic turn of
events, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his US counterpart,
Antony Blinken, in Malta yesterday, sparking a walkout by delegations from Ukraine,
Poland, and Estonia. The meeting, part of the Organization for Security and
Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) gathering, marked Lavrov's first visit to an EU
nation since the war in Ukraine began. As expected, the meeting was tense, with
Lavrov's speech prompting the walkout. The delegations from Ukraine, Poland,
and Estonia left the room in protest, leaving Blinken and Lavrov to continue
their discussions. The meeting has been seen as a reincarnation of the Cold
War, with a much greater risk of escalating into a hot conflict. Lavrov's
comments during the meeting were characterized as a "tsunami of
misinformation" by some attendees. In a related development, Lavrov gave
an interview to American journalist Tucker Carlson earlier this week, which
some saw as an attempt to improve Russia's image in the US. However, others
were skeptical, noting that Vladimir Putin has a history of dealing effectively
with former US President Donald Trump.
